A little bland, a little black and a little Blunt…

EB2

BEST DRESSED: Emily Blunt in Michael Kors
To say I love awards season is to say the Kardashians are sparing with eye makeup. The fashion, the famous faces, the faux pas’. I adore it all.
The beautiful gold colour is one I’d class alongside the trend of nude/neutral tones at this year’s Globes but it has a certain sheen and depth that the others in the same palette were lacking. On anyone else, this probably would’ve failed – let’s not kid ourselves into thinking her figure isn’t the real key here. The cutout detail would be disastrous on almost anyone else. Blunt is also awarded best accessory not only for her fuchsia earrings and bracelet which accent the dress perfectly, but for her stunning arm candy, husband John Krasinski. Yum.

THE TREND THAT NEVER DIES: Black
Black is the new black because black is the best and nothing will ever replace black. This is the thought process your brain should follow when in doubt of what to wear. It’s not a safe (ala boring) choice. It’s a smart one. Detail is, I think, key. All the looks below are basic black with a little va va voom.
BLACK
Helen Mirren (far left) defies age. She just keeps getting better, putting most of her peers to shame in this long sleeved Badgley Mischka number with gold neck and waist detailing. Julianne Moore (second from left) and Kate Hudson (third from left) were also stunning in long sleeved black gowns with a twist. Moore’s Tom Ford gown with white detailing and Hudson’s Alexander McQueen with gold neck detailing a little reminiscent of Mirren’s, a waist cinching belt and a plunging keyhole cutout detail at the front. DIVINE. Kate came very close to Best Dressed for me. I’m almost changing my mind as I type. And finally Kristen Wiig (far right) in Michael Kors. This look is SO simple but so effective. The cutout, just below the bust, turns the dress from drab to delightful.

THE TREND THAT I’M HOPING WILL DIE SOON: The pale palette.

Pale may make up a large portion of the word palette but I don’t think we should regard that as significant. Look, I know neutrals and nudes and pinks and whites can look incredible. But there’s something I find incredibly underwhelming about colours so close to skin tone. I know most will probably disagree with me on this but I just don’t find this colour palette…striking.
Neutrals
Despite myself, I quite like this strapless Marchesa fishtail dress on Amy Adams (far left). I think she is saved by her beautiful red hair which contrasts against the pale pink of the dress. Anne Hathaway (middle) in white Chanel is actually one of my favourite looks but once again, I think her short sassy hair is the saviour. While the haircut itself is definitely not boyish (Hathaway could never look boyish with that beautiful face), I think it definitely adds a masculine element to the whole ensemble which I love. I’m not a girly-girl so this works well for me. Jennifer Lopez/J-Lo/Jenny from the Block (far right) just EXUDES cool. This dress is SO feminine. The old Hollywood glam hair is SO feminine. The accessories SO feminine. I should hate it but I dont, because look at that ‘tude. That figure. She’s just daring you to dislike her look. I for one, don’t like dares. Well played, J-Lo, well played.
THE TREND THAT I LOVE: 50 Shades of Orange…and Red
Orange&Red
Honestly, oranges and reds have to be the most flattering colours. I think I can bet safely on most of your nail polish collections containing dominantly orange and red tones. Why? Because they are so universally flattering. So WHY don’t we wear them more? No matter your skintone, there is an orange or red for you. From Jessica Alba in pale peach Oscar de la Renta, to Jennifer Lawrence in bright coral Dior, to Jennifer Garner in deep red Vivienne Westwood, to BLOODY BOMBSHELL Miranda Kerr in a burgundy Zuhair Murad number.
HOPING THIS BECOMES A TREND: A pop of SERIOUS colour.
NR3
Oh, Nicole Richie. I am lost for words. This brilliant blue Naeem Khan dress is such a bold choice and I honestly cannot rave enough about it. Dress, hair, make-up are SO well pieced together it’s insane. Long sleeves are such a winner at this year’s Globes.
